I wish I’d known this sooner — it would’ve saved me so much time (and a few stories that drifted away because I neglected them).
As you know, my WIP, Elemental Divide, is rooted in the elements. When I started writing it, I had no idea how much they’d start whispering back — not just in the story, but in my creative process. Over time, that spark evolved into a whole new way of seeing how writers forge.
When most people picture a forge, they imagine fire — heat, power, transformation. But in truth, smelting (the act of creation) requires all the elements working together.
🔥 Fire: Brings the heat — the passion and ignition that start it all.
🌊 Water: Cools and tempers — giving shape and rhythm to what was molten.
🌬️ Wind: Fuels the flame — breath, motion, momentum. Without it, even fire fades.
🪨 Earth: Grounds and anchors — it holds the forge, provides resistance, and gives form to the molten idea.
✨ Ether: The unseen spark — that strange, divine magic that breathes life into everything you create.
And here’s the real magic: we use all the elements when we write, but one always leads the dance.
It’s our natural strength — the element we instinctively return to when the forge gets hot.
Knowing your dominant element helps you avoid getting trapped in your own creative chaos:
🔥Fire burns too long and risks burnout.
🌊Water floods the page with endless rewriting.
🌬️Wind moves too fast, missing what needs to root.
🪨Earth can harden before the work has fully formed.
✨Ether drifts so far into vision, it forgets the shape of the forge.
But here’s the secret — when you know your element, you move with the current instead of against it.
When you trust your nature, even the tide becomes part of your rhythm.
Because the forge doesn’t demand perfection — it asks for presence.
Fire writers find freedom in bursts.
Water writers discover rhythm in return.
Wind writers move with instinct and precision.
Earth writers build steady foundations.
Ether writers create through intuition and vision.
(And yes, it also helps you know when to stop rewriting that one chapter for the 83rd time… not that I’d know anything about that. 😅)
